GETTING YOUR CAR REGISTERED

Registration is required for all road vehicles in Alaska unless explicitly exempted by law. The act of registering a vehicle demonstrates to the State of Alaska that you are aware of it and that you have paid all applicable taxes and fees.

The State of Alaska issues registration for commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles, trucks, buses, vans, ATV's, motorcycles, boats, snow machines and trailers.

REGISTRATION FINE PRINT

If the vehicle has been rebuilt or abandoned, the registration must be renewed after it has been expired for a year. In addition, if the previous owner obtained an exemption, it was bought at an impound sale, or both. For cars changing from non-commercial to commercial use, registration must be renewed as well.

Non-Commercial vehicles are registered for a  2 year period. Minimum 13 months registartion required.

Commercial vehicles have the option of a 1 year or 2 year registration option.

TAXES: For the towns and boroughs that have elected to have this form of personal property tax, the State of Alaska collects a Motor Vehicle Registration Tax (MVRT). Your location and model year determine the tax rate.
